Like most people running Windows XP, there has become an increasing trend in the number of people looking for tips on how to speed up XP. Having spent most of my life working with computers, I can assure you that it's nothing that the average user does that makes their computers run slower. The problem starts when people move house without updating their telephone number in the phone directory, so it starts to make things a little more difficult when you need to call someone. The same thing happens in the Windows Registry, after a while, the entries become invalid because
of improper updates and makes things a lot harder to complete whenever you need your computer to do something.
So let's get down to the top 3 things you can do to speed up XP.
1. Perform a disk clean-up: Click on the 'Start' menu button, then click on 'All Programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools' and select 'Disk Cleanup' from the list.
2. Remove unwanted applications: Open the Control Panel and select the 'Add or Remove Programs' application. When the list of programs loads up, scroll through and remove the ones that you don't use anymore.
3. Defragment your Windows Registry: Probably the most important of the 3 steps and the one that will make the most difference. The only thing is that you'll need to purchase a program from the internet as Windows doesn't come with any utilities to fix this problem. You'll want to find a good Registry Cleaner/Defragmenter and run the application 1-2 times per month. These programs should only cost you about $20-$30 and is significantly cheaper than getting a computer technician to fix your computer.
